The tech world was abuzz when Microsoft released its latest “Windows 10” operating software at the end of July. Now about a month into its release comes the first round of updates due to some complaints and difficulties with the original version. “It’s not odd for operating systems to be upgraded, as resolving any issues comes with the territory when releasing any new type of software,” says Massimo DeRocchis, president of Priority Networks. “The difficulties users were having were fairly consistent and so Microsoft knew what they had to address right away.”

There were a variety of complaints coming from Windows 10 users. Some of the most prevalent issues include having trouble upgrading from a previous Windows operating system, not being able to access the “start” icon, and the screen flickering on and off once Windows 10 was installed.

Another difficulty many users experienced was not being able to turn off automatic updates from the Windows 10 store. Users said they were actually presented with the option once they installed Windows 10, but the toggle button wasn’t working, which meant automatic updates remained on. The new update addresses this issue, along with several others. Microsoft has said the new updates are to “enhance functionality.”

“This certainly won’t be the last round of updates Microsoft goes through,” DeRocchis concludes. “This is a brand new operating system, which means most functions are not only new to users, but also to the engineers. Microsoft will have to continue making adjustments as the software continues to be incorporated into the masses.”

PriorityNetworks_image_082715Even if you aren’t at all interested in the tech world, it’s hard not to have heard about the latest Ashley Madison hack. A hacker group calling themselves Impact Team infiltrated the “cheating” web site and posted the names of tens of millions of its users over the web. Along with some of the names on that list causing some controversy, the bigger question is that of network security and protecting sensitive information of online users.

What’s important to know is that proper networking support is not relegated to larger companies like Ashley Madison. In fact, small businesses are targets for hackers just the same. And these businesses need to align themselves with professional IT organizations who can give them the peace of mind they need knowing their data is protected.

More than Just Ashley Madison  

The entire Ashley Madison hacking scandal has dominated the headlines for the past few weeks. The nature of the company being hacked has added to the intrigue of the story, and as the weeks pass and more and more names are made public, the flame will continue to be fanned by the media. Searching for a positive from all of this hoopla, perhaps the popularity of the Ashley Madison situation will force more people to pay attention to a problem that impacts businesses and organizations, small or large.

Late last month, the Pentagon reported a hacking of its e-mail network. Though they pointed the finger at the Russians, U.S. officials admit that, “Attribution in this business is near impossible.” The Pentagon was forced to shut down its e-mail system for at least two weeks to mitigate any damages caused by the hack.

Small businesses have felt the wrath of hackers, also. The hacker tactic involves the hijacking of sensitive business files and data that they use to blackmail these small businesses into paying them a sum of money to return the information. Even financial institutions have been targeted through their mobile applications. Hackers are again hijacking online accounts and demanding ransom.

Slightly less critical, but equally as intrusive, hackers are targeting everyday people by compromising their personal pictures stored online and ransoming them for upwards of $800.00 in most cases. We’ve seen these examples happen in the cases of celebrities where the pictures are simply leaked, but others are forced to pay if they want their personal pictures returned.

Be Vigilant About Online Security    

We mentioned that perhaps there is some good to the Ashley Madison hack turning into such a mainstream story. It really does go a long way to making people more aware and forcing everyone to pay much more attention to their online habits. On an individual level, caution is the key. Don’t be giving out passwords over e-mail and make sure your passwords are complicated.

For small businesses, the process is a bit more complex but can be addressed with one vigilant step; hiring an IT company able to function competently at a time when network demands are greater than ever. You must know the history of the company, know other clients they have worked for and currently work with, and feel confident that they can provide a level of service.  This level should not only push your company forward as it relates to incorporating technology, but give you the peace of mind of knowing your data is safe. PriorityNetworks_image_082415Cloud has sharply penetrated work culture and changed the way in which businesses operate on several levels. Small- and mid-sized business in particular have been able to take advantage of what cloud computing is able to offer, specifically as it relates to storage.

One industry that doesn’t receive a lot of attention when it comes to its cloud support is e-commerce. But looking at the number of e-commerce companies that now run their sites in the cloud, it’s clearly a big business that deserves much more conversation than is currently being held.

What is Cloud Computing?

Cloud computing has become a very familiar term. But there’s always a bit of blur when people try to describe precisely what cloud computing is. Cloud computing is basically accessing the storage capacity a company has already created on a pay-on-demand type system which prevents you from having to create and own that computing capacity outright. Probably the first image that comes to mind when people think of cloud is software as a service (SaaS) . These are services like Dropbox, Google Docs, and other similar services that allow users to create and store files that are accessible anywhere an internet connection is available, and in some cases even offline where no connection is available.

Benefits of Cloud in E-Commerce  

One of the most immediate benefits of cloud as it relates to e-commerce is the flexibility. Commerce in general goes through cycles, and e-commerce is no different. There are times during the year when businesses will do the majority of their work volume or have significant spikes in sales. Consider times like Christmas or Thanksgiving (Black Friday, specifically). Many e-commerce stores will enjoy much of their sales during those holiday seasons, but have significantly less sales and traffic during the rest of the year. What cloud computing allows is for e-commerce companies to adjust the amount of cloud support they need depending on these projections.

Tied in with the flexibility of cloud computing is the cost. Being able to essentially lease cloud space as needed means companies can ramp up and cut back as the market dictates. This leads to, at times, significant cost savings which is huge for smaller businesses in particular.

Security is another benefit worth noting. When cloud initially became popular, there were some concerns about outside parties gaining access to sensitive data and the question of how reliable and trustworthy these third-party cloud storage providers could be in safeguarding data. Governments and business like banks and medical organizations, in particular, who deal with heavy government regulation were hesitant to adopt cloud storage on the basis of questionable security. But many of those concerns have been addressed or are being addressed and these entities are creating solutions in which cloud can be effectively utilized.

For e-commerce retailers, it’s about trusting the cloud provider. There’s a bit of a power shift when you place so much of your data in the hands of a third party, so it’s important to do research beforehand to figure out the reputation and track record of the cloud provider you end up choosing.
